Last night before I went to bed I was challenged by Toronto Sun columnist Mark Bonokoski to be a “little kinder to the Sun”.
I slept on it.
I decided that I could probably try to be a bit more objective in my criticism to the Sun. I actually long for the day that TorontoSunSucks.com is renamed “TorontoSunTheGood.com”.
I think the Toronto Sun has a unique opportunity with it’s colourful cover to be a force of good for Toronto.
I do however have a standard that the Toronto Sun has yet to meet; hence the very existence of this website.
So I decided to devise a rating system for the cover pages, and each day I will assess which category the cover page falls under:
- Positive News – The cover in general shows something positive. Examples include: “PUPPY LOVE”, or “LOST AND FOUND”.
- Negative News – The cover is highlighting negative news, such as “SORDID PAST OF KAYLEE’S DAD”, or “YOUTH ON BAIL BRINGS GUN TO SCHOOL” or “GANG WAR FEARED” or “A LIVING HELL”.
- Childish – This category is reserved for those headlines with the cartoons that the Toronto Sun pulls out once in a while, such as “HAVE NOT”, or “UNLUCKY 13”.
Each day I will categorize the cover page and I’ll keep a running tally on the right side of the site to uncover the proportion of positive covers vs. negative covers.
This will allow me to be more objective and possibly “kinder” to the Toronto Sun.
